The choir during a rehearsal for their performance of Bach St Matthew Passion in Norwich Cathedral
May I, on behalf of the Officers, Committee and members of the Mid Norfolk Singers, welcome you to our website. We have existed now for over 50 years based on a constitution which has changed little in that time. The choir was founded "for the purposes of educating its members, and the public, in the art and appreciation of choral music" and this remains our aim. We are a registered charity and nowadays funds are raised for charitable purposes at specific events, rather than being donated from our of excess income, as was probably originally the case.
Our concerts, at Christmas, Easter and in early summer, are held in local churches, the major works usually at St. Nicholas' Church here in Dereham, but the more light-hearted summer concert in village churches which are better able to cope with the smaller choir that we tend to have for the summer term. We have forged a close link with the choir in Ruthen, Dereham"s twin town. We usually meet bi-annually, here or in Germany. the 'home' choir hosting the visitors. These are always enjoyable. successful events and many memorable social evenings have been spent together.
Whilst we rehearse for ten months of the year, with only short breaks at Christmas and Easter, we never find this to be a hardship. This isn't work, it's a hobby and the principal aim is to enjoy what we do. If you choose to join us, II hope you will quickly make many friends and feel at home. To help in this respect we occasionally hold social events which have the dual purpose of allowing us to talk rather than sing, and also to raise funds to supplement subscriptions.
