Job Description for the Position of Director of Music for the Mid Norfolk Singers
Position available from September 2022
We are an established, well-regarded SATB choir, founded 70 years ago, with around 40 chorus members since returning to rehearsals in 2021. We rehearse on Thursday nights from 7.30pm to 9.30pm in the Salvation Army Hall, East Dereham and stage three public concerts a year, in March, July and December. We also have a connection with the Kammerchor of Ruthen, Germany and have had exchange visits every couple of years with performances, either in Dereham or Ruthen.
We perform works mainly, but not exclusively, from the classical and sacred choral repertoire, and work with professional orchestral musicians and soloists. We are not auditioning our chorus members at the present time, who have a range of abilities from intermediate to experienced singers. We have a Rehearsal Accompanist and an Assistant Conductor who have expressed their willingness to work with the new Director.
The main duties of the Musical Director are as follows:
-
Conducting weekly rehearsals (around 36 per year, based on school term times)
-
Co-ordinating and conducting concerts and other occasional performances
-
Choosing our concert programme, and liaising with the Librarian regarding choral scores, in advance of first rehearsal
-
Recruiting orchestral musicians and other accompanists, and sourcing orchestral scores or arrangements
-
Recruiting solo singers for concerts
-
The MD will be invited to attend Committee Meetings which take place monthly to advise on musical and other matters
-
Assisting our Programme Editor with material for the printed concert programme
The choir has an experienced and dedicated Management Committee comprising Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Librarian and 5 other members. In addition there is a Social Committee who undertake a number of fundraising events through the year.
We intend to accept applications from candidates between now and the end of May, and shortlisted candidates will be asked to audition with the full choir and a piano Accompanist for part of a rehearsal.
The position of Musical Director is a paid position and we will negotiate appropriate rehearsal and concert fees with the successful candidate, commensurate with experience.
The first full term (Autumn 2022) is to be considered a probationary period, after which we would require six months' notice of resignation, except in exceptional circumstances.
